Try checking the lights on the front of your laptop, are any indicator lights on? I have an older Acer Extensa, but the quickest way for me to identify what its probably doing is that if I see two different colored lights I know that; 1. a green light means there is power to the laptop so more than likely it isn't actually off or all lights would be off, 2. if I see an amber/orange light on the front or near the power button its in a power setting mode, which means its either hibernating or sleeping. You can usually wake it by quickly tapping the power button or tapping the enter button, depending on your laptop you may have options hot keys on the keyboard. If it wakes by doing any of those things then check your power settings to see if you have it set to sleep or hibernate.
I have Windows 7, I left click on the start/ lower left Windows Icon on the task bar/control panel/performance and tools/ then on the left side list, power setting options. Or just click start and in the search box type power options, you'll see the direct link under the control panel section. I hope that helps. Try running troubleshooter too
