Why has The motherboard has stopped working in my ext hard drive case, what can i do
I have tried the hard drive in another caddy and it works fine, which has led me to suspect the motherboard inside the case, can i buy another motherboard or do i need to forget that idea and just buy another caddy

No, that's not required. Open "My Computer" and then right click on it to find the hard drives listed. If it shows up THERE, and isn't showing when you first plug the USB in, then there's nothing wrong other than the computer just isn't recognizing it as Booted to, or as an external hard drive.
