Why is a ''D'' battery needed for my Lionel Diesel engine?
I have a Lionel Diesel engine that has a space in the bottom for a ''D'' battery. I put one in place but can't figure out what it is for. Please help.
Thanks, P.B., Furlong, PA

This is just a guess but it may have powered headlights or other lights on the train at one time, some of then even had a smoke producing device on them.
All correct, it is for the horn. be sre contacs are clean, free of vertigre. thats the white / green powdery stuff.... clean best you can spay lightly with CRC 226,use best alaky battery you can get,and when your not using the train, REMOVE the battery !
The D battery is to power the bicycle type horn inside the engine. When you hit the whistle button a relay engages and the battery powers up the horn. This is going on the assumption that this is a postwar Lionel engine.
