Why is my bicycle making a banging noise on the downstroke of the pedals and even occasionally when I am coasting
The noise does not occur on every pedal stroke, but very frequently. The problem has come and gone previously but is occurring more regularly.

Check the Bottom bracket, if no obvious rubbing of the front chain rings.
Bicycle Parts Glossary
Most likely a loose bottom bracket bearing, but some other possibilities as well. Try to move the crank arm back and forth (sideways) across the bicycle. If you feel play the bearings need to be adjusted. If not then an in-person assessment is probably necessary. Bike shops will give you a free repair estimate.
