Why might my 5 speed manual transmission in my 1999 Ford Ranger XLT hard to shift into each gear?
I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT with a 5 speed manual transmission. However, recently I have been having a problem shifting gears. I start it in neutral and have to force it into reverse or first gear. Then after driving it and needing to shift into second or third gear, it still is hard and rough. After driving for about 10 minutes, it starts to shift more smoothly. It also goes through a lot of DOT 3 Brake fluid for the clutch reservoir. Why might this be?

Sounds as if you may need a clutch replacement or if that has been done recently then you are having hydraulic concerns in the clutch slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder, check to see if there is air in the system and repair as needed...
The throw out bearing and pressure Plate but if your going that far just change all, but try to adjust it first but I think it's time to replace them and have the flywheel/flex plate resurfaced
Is your clutch pedal soft? If so you could have a slave cylinder leaking or maybe just in the the system bleed back up. Might be that the clutch drive disc is burned up making it hard to shift
