As far as I know, the engines are basically identical on the outside. The problem with engine swapping on these computer-controlled cars is, you also have to change the computer since each engine has a computer programmed for that particular engine. This often requires not only changing the computer but also changing wiring harnesses to match. In short, the engines will most likely swap but it is the computer that makes the difference.
