Have you tried strumming with the directional knob? This should also work. Also, your scores might probably be hirer with this method depending on what type of guitar you are using. Many of the guitars accidently do a double strum when you use the strum bar, but this does not happen with the directional pad, also less noise if any one in your home complains about that.

I believe that it is an internal problem with the guitar, and the easiest and probably best thing to do is return it.
