Yard Machine Transmission Problem
I have a 17 hp MTD Yard Machine riding mower. It's somewhere around a 2001 - 2003 model. It suddenly stopped while I cutting grass as if I hit something. The back wheels are now locked up. It won't even go into neutral. I checked the belts and the rod that leads to the brake pedal and it all looked good. I took the belt off of the large pulley under the seat and it will not turn and the mower still won't roll. Everything else is fine. Any suggestions - I really don't want to replace the transmission if I don't have to!

Well, gotta say, transmission is first thing that popped into my head...until Iread a web blog on some problems with a similiar MTD, although not exactly the same model as yours. Here's the web page, and scan down to the part where they're talking about a rear gear coming loose and getting jammed. It just might be similar to the problem you're having:

I would check out the rear axle before diving into the transmission- you just might get lucky. Good luck, and hope this helps.
Hi,
In most of the cases we have found that the valve timing needs to be set. Please try to reset it. You can also check the bellow mentioned link for any part replacement as requested at the end part of your question:
