We've had the above washer nearly 10 years now and it's been fantastic with one repair in its lifetime - new bearings on the drum.
However, its started to make a noise now when the drum is turning. Hard to describe the noise but if you can imagine its got a sore throat and is sounding rougher than normal. There's an odd scraping or knocking sound on each turn. Not bad just a bit unnerving. Currently it's okay when spinning but I fear whatever the problem is it will spread to the spin cycle in due time.
I've done some search on line already on how to detect and fix but not being a repairman, it's not that easy when this machine doesn't seem to appear on websites. I wouldn't mind some assistance on this please.
So far I've ensured it's turned off from the mains, I've opened the top easily enough (a couple of screws at the back) but am now faced with all the guts of the machine ie wires and pipes etc. I can see the drum underneath all the tech stuffy but will need to open up a lot more screws to get access to it. i can't see any belts, pulleys or err spiders.
How do I proceed and and what should I look (or listen) for?

How to open a Zanussi FJ1093 Washing Machine
Unplug the washing machine - DONT rely on swithcing off power at the plug.
HOW TO REMOVE the TOP.
1. Remove the top by unscrewing the two securing screws at the back.
The top slides backwards.
HOW TO REMOVE the back section.
This model has two half sections secured by screws.
1. Locate a small plastic cover at the bottom of both sides.
2. Prise off the plastic covers with a small screwdriver.
3. Unscrew the screws inside.
4. Unscrew the screws at the top. Leave front screws to support the drum.
5. Pull the back section free from the Machine.
HOW TO REMOVE the DRUM
1. Record all wiring by sketch or photo with your digital camera or phone.
2. Remove the motor.
3. Place a support (old plastic paint container) under the drum.
4. Release the springs with a wire clothes hanger bent into a hook shape.
5. Squeeze the plastic shock absorber grips and release them from the drum.
6. remove the drum
HOW TO REPLACE the BEARINGS
1. With a cordless screwdriver and suitable hex attachment unscrew the bolts securing both halves together. It is very slow by hand!
2. Hammer out the worn bearing moving around the outer edge of the bearing housing on each stroke.
3. Insert the new bearing and hammer into place by placing the old bearing on it or a flat piece of metal which mates with the outer bearing race. Dont hammer the bearing directly.
HOW TO RE-ASSEMBLE THE DRUM.
1. Retrace your steps referring to your photos or sketches.
OTHER DESIGN WEAKNESSES:-
1. Water may seep onto the connections to the pump and cause the power to trip. It may also cause the connertor to the pump to corrode and break. The washing machine will not empty as power is disconnected from the pump.
2. The timer track in the external assembly may burn. It can be dis assembled and repaired. To avoid breaking the control knobs unscrew the center screw on the timer shaft after prising off the control know plastic cover. Mark parts with marker to ensure proper re assembly.
3. The brushes in the motor will wear. They can be replaced quite easily.
4. The door switch will fail.

A washing machine may wiggle, rattle or move across the floor. It is often accompanied by excessive noise. There can be several causes and the problem is worse with some machines more than others.
The most common cause is an unbalanced wash load. Open the lid and when it comes to a stop, redistribute the clothing to balance the weight. Heavy loads, especially things like comforters, are more likely to become unbalanced than small loads. If you do a lot of heavy loads, you should consider a heavy duty/large capacity washer when it comes time to replace your current unit.
A washer must be level both from side to side as well as from front to back. Washing machines have adjustable feet to enable you to level them. See our article on how to level your washing machine.
The outer tub is supported by springs, pistons or counterweights to keep it balanced. The weight of all that water in a wash load requires a powerful balancing mechanism. If the balancing system becomes detached from one or more points, it will not be able to balance the load properly. Furthermore, even if everything appears to be in place, as the appliance ages, the springs or pistons may begin to wear out and not support as much weigh as needed.
Unplug the washer and open the cabinet. Because of the variety of balancing mechanisms, you will have to inspect your machine to determine how it is balanced. Once you discover the mechanism, then inspect it for integrity. In the case of old parts that appear to be in working order, you may not be able to tell if they need to be replaced. They may be weak but appear to be in good condition. If no other solution resolves the problem, then replacing the balancing springs or other moving support parts may be called for.
Another common cause for excessive movement is the floor on which the washer rests. The washer is heavy and even more so when filled with water. Any floor, other than a concrete slab, will tend to pick up and amplify the vibrations from the machine.
There are a couple things you can try. If you have access to the joists under the floor, you may be able to beef up the support. Another thing to try is placing a large sheet of plywood under the washer. It should be 3/4" or even 1" thick and as large as possible to distribute the weight. Use a sheet big enough for both the washer and dryer to sit on. If possible fasten the plywood to the existing floor.
