Last night I was using my computer. While I slept it ran a windows update. This morning I woke up the mouse didn't work, so I forced the computer to restart. Since then, it has continued to restart. It goes through the normal loading screens and then it goes to a screen giving me options to restart it: safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good configuration, etc If I click safe mode, it loads a bunch of codes for about 20 seconds then restarts. If I select the last known good configuration, it goes to the windows xp loading page then after about a minute restarts. The same for when I do the start normally. I've tried unplugging all the usb things but nothing changed. I can't even get to the log-in page. Please help!

Plug everything back in... that makes no difference. The SAFE mode without networking is the most restricted software load. You want to "Restore to an earlier time".
That restoration process will unload the Windows update.
If the above fails, in the safe mode, select "step-by-step". You will have to press the Enter key for each software module to load. PLEASE make a note of the last module to load before the computer gets sick. Let me know (I will be on here tomorrow). We can go from there... If you want live chat - that can and should get you going faster...
Now you need windows disk or recovery disk. Insert that disk in cd/dvd rom. Then when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios. Then go to boot menu and set first boot device as cd/dvd rom then save settings and exit. Then it boot with disk follow the procedure on screen. Then choose "R" option for Recovery console then type in prompt "chkdsk /r" then press "y" then it fix error on hard drive. Then resatrt computer then check . If still same then boot again and this time select "r" option for repair previous windows. Then you can get again your windows. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.
Sometimes Windows updates do not work due to hardware compatibility problems. So updates should be taken very cautiously. I am sure you must be having a lot of data that you do not want to lose. If you reinstall Windows to the same Windows folder, then you will loose all My Documents and My Pics, etc folders. So, what you can do is to reinstall Windows to a different folder, eg, WINXP or some such. You will get a new My Documents. But your old one with your data would be available in C:\WINDOWS folder.
Problem with your case is that you can not boot in any mode despite so many available, ie, Safe Mode, With networking, Last good one etc etc. That means that there are some files that have got corrupted or are looking for some hardware that you do not have. When you download Windows Updates then Windows does not see if you need them or not. And gives you everything. It is for you to select the ones that you want, And that is the time you were sleeping. So everything got installed and here we are. if it booted even once in safe mode you could have restored the PC to an earlier date and none would have been wiser.

I am going to assume that this is NOT a laptop.

Yes if you choose recovery option but make sure you not format the disk .
Choose only recover and repair option.
