Recently bought a used 9800XL, would not work with latest ScanWizard Pro v7.132 from Microtek sight which said it was short of a .dll file on installation, and could not find the scanner on either USB or firewire connections. Scanner worked fine (better than expected actually) with the simple scan program from within windows however, but took a long time importing to photoshop (1.5 hours for a 600dpi scan of the whole bed!!) but was fine saving directly to tiff (about 4 mins for the same thing). After a week of really effective scanning I turned on yesterday to no image at preview (or final scan) and a double very loud click (belt jumping two pulley teeth) at the end of the carriage travel. Tried removing all software (including drivers) and reinstalling - same result. Tried again with ScanWizard v6.10 which actually found the scanner but with the same result - no image etc. Any ideas, could it be corrupted firmware or damaged hardware? Thanks for looking Nick Philp,
Damaged hardware - the belt jumped because the carriage was jammed. You must dismantle the scanner and find the cause of the jam - most likely the carriage caught a cable, find out why it did that.
Have opened the case and there is nothing inside getting in the way of the carriage. It gets to the end of its travel and touches the case which causes the belt to jump two teeth. There is also no image produced in prescan or scan, only a solid black panel. I have installed the scanner on another computer and it does the same thing. Any ideas? In that case the sensors on the carriage (or the electronics controlling it) are faulty. Sorry to tell you but this is unfixable, the scanner is dead.
